Sober powwow

Earlier this month I attended a sober powwow on the Fond du Lac reservation. A celebration of recovery rooted in tradition and culture. We set up our studio and asked, “What has helped you move toward healing?”

Also there, was Randell Sam, who I met a few years ago and interviewed him about his recovery and his work helping others find their way toward healing. You can find that interview from our archives here. A few days after the powwow, Randell posted some powerful words on his social media, and I am sharing it below with his permission, followed by the responses we heard at the powwow. Thanks to everyone who shared a story and continued strength on your journey.

by Randell Sam

How do they expect us to survive,
When so much of us are broken.

For so many of us,
Every part of our heart is broken.

It feels impossible to even want to go on,
Though so much more of us are required to live.

I know the trials you face,
I know how impossible it is;
To want to give in,
But be unable to because others expect more of you.

Maybe, just maybe for right now;
We must endure.

Just so others do not see our weaknesses.

My friends, even on our hardest days,
But especially on our hardest days,
We need to persevere and endure.

When others see us,
Let them really see us.

For we are stronger,
Because they hold us up.

Remember that and this:
Your life matters.
You are beautiful.
You are worthy.
You are not alone.
We are blessed.
We are stronger together.

Warrior up and march on.
